ANIME Fairytale Theater

Programming >  ANIME Fairytale Theater

To celebrate five years of performances, AnimeBelle's Fairytale Theater will be taking a unique twist at Bellecon 2013!  For years now, we've brought you the experience of traditional Japanese culture, by way of plays, comedy acts, song, and dance, presented with as much authenticism as we were able.  One comment many people have approached us with is, "That sounds like the story from this anime!"  Why so many similarities?  Because many anime are inspired or take direction from traditional Japanese folk tales.  At Bellecon 2013, the ANIME Fairytale Theater will be bringing you traditional Japanese fairytales portrayed by your favorite anime characters.

As the legend goes...

One day, while walking in the bamboo forest, an old, childless bamboo cutter called Taketori no Okina ("the Old Man who Harvests Bamboo") came across a mysterious, shining stalk of bamboo.  After cutting it open, he found inside it a baby the size of his thumb.  He rejoiced to find such a beautiful girl and took her home.  He and his wife raised her as their own child and named her Nayotake-no-Kaguya-hime, meaning "princess of flexible bamboos scattering light"... or Princess Kaguya for short.  Thereafter, Taketori no Okina found that whenever he cut down a stalk of bamboo, inside would be a small nugget of gold.  Soon he became rich.  Kaguya-hime grew from a small baby into a woman of ordinary size and extraordinary beauty.  At first, Taketori no Okina tried to keep her away from outsiders, but over time the news of her beauty had spread, and handsome princes came to ask for Princess Kaguya's hand in marriage.

This is their story...

What To Bring To Auditions

  • A completed audition form.
  • Comfortable clothes and shoes.  Cosplay is not recommended for the auditioning process.
  • A prepared, 1-minute monologue.  See below for more information.
  • A normal, out of cosplay photo.
  • OPTIONAL: A photo of you in cosplay.
  • OPTIONAL: A portfolio for the interview portion.

What To Expect At Auditions

Each audition session will begin with an orientation process, in which we will explain the nature of the shows, what will be expected of performers, and hopefully clear up any questions you may have.  After orientation, we will move onto the audition.  Activities of the audition include, but are not limited to spoken performances, physical fitness, flexibility, and dance ability.  During the audition, you will be asked to perform a quick self-prepared monologue.  This monologue should be chosen to best demonstrate your acting ability; it doesn't have to be by your preferred choice of character, but it is recommended.  Your monologue does not need to be a verbatim translation of a scene from your particular anime or manga; creativity is encouraged!  Extra reading material will be available for certain characters, at the interviewer's discretion.  Interviewers may ask questions and take notes, and your interview will be recorded on video to aid in the selection process.

We strongly recommend you bring water and wear sunscreen.  Though we have made an effort to pick shady locations, this is Florida after all, and outdoor auditions are subject to the elements.  Because of the physical activity involved in auditions, eating large or heavy meals prior to auditions are strongly discouraged.  Please practice your monologue in advance; your ability to recite it without referring to reading material will be a major plus.

Additional Notes

If you are not able to attend one of more of the rehearsal dates, you must indicate this on your tryout form so that we can coordinate this with the staff.  We understand that you may have other things to do, such as school, family activities, and prior obligations.  However, we must know of this in advance.

You must be able to provide for your own costume for the event, be it making or purchasing it yourself.  Because of the uniquely Japanese style of costuming used in ANIME Fairytale Theater, you will be provided with costuming requirements that may be unusual.  Our staff will work closely with all performers to ensure that their costumes are accurate.  If you wish to use pre-existing costume pieces for a character, they must meet approval of the ANIME Fairytale Theater directoral staff.

The script for the ANIME Fairytale Theater is written solely by the BelleCON staff, and is subject to change, within reasonable notice.

You must be able to attend the performance of the ANIME Fairytale Theater at BelleCON, as well as all requisite at-con rehearsals on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (May 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th).  There is no exception to this.

Because ANIME Fairytale Theater runs all weekend, it will count as eight volunteer hours.  You will receive a Cast Badge to commemorate your participation in the ANIME Fairytale Theater, which will carry all of the normal privilages of a weekend pass.

All positions are open for consideration.  No roles that are cast for other shows will guarantee a position in this performance.  For example, if you are cast as Sanji in the Starlight Ball, that does not necessarily mean you will be cast as Sanji in ANIME Fairytale Theater.

Posted characters are subject to change if necessary.

If you are selected for a character, there is no guarantee that it is for a preferred character.

Shown outfits above are for character representation only, and do not reflect the types of outfits required for the show.  More shall be explained as roles are filled.

We are also interested in those who would like to work as tech and stagehand crew.
